Sofy Major - ST - 12" Vinyl This self-titled EP (on Argghh!! Records) is the impressive proper début from Sofy Major - yet another promising French act that delves into the noisier realms of metallic/post-hardcore with loads of caustic guitar textures and clashing chord phrasings, harsh vocals creams, and a solid rhythmic core that drives the bulk of the song writing. The material's certainly not devoid of melody, however, as even some of the lightly distorted bass lines carry a certain tinge of melody beneath the surface; while the presence of some softer passages that utilize glitchy electronics and fluid ambient undercurrents - as well as some socio-politically oriented samples - creates a darker sort of atmosphere that's very effective in the grand
scheme of things. I'd certainly classify their sound as one that would fit in nicely amongst the rosters of excellent French labels like Basement Apes and Radar Swarm, that's for sure. The recording also has a dry, stripped down sort of feel to it that fits the tone of the music rather well; while the nice, simple artwork with entirely handwritten text rounds things out alongside the often cryptic lyrics |

The Deviltones - Riding The High Horse - CD The first track, "Chrome Molly", caught me a bit off guard with a very obvious rip off from the riff of 13th Floor Elevators' "Two Headed Dog". Grand theft Roky! Well, I forgive this Virginia 4-piece cuz "Riding The High Horse" is such a sleazy knuckle sandwich of amped up snotty punkrock'n'roll. The line-up also includes "Demon Boy" Don Cilurso of Texas Terri & The Stiff Ones, so you know the outfit has got the chops to burn everything in sight, baby! Fans of unsung 90s heroes like Inhalants, Bottomfeeders, and Fumes should check out The Deviltones. Essential stuff for any redblooded rock'n'roller who thinks today's hip sensitive indie acts and boring emobands should be flushed down the toilet! |

The Born Losers - For Chicago Girls - 7" Vinyl THE BORN LOSERS debut seven inch on Scarey is probably one of the best 77 inspired punk rock singles you can get. This band formed in Alaska and moved to Portland, OR, trashing the place with three great originals, "For Chicago Girls", "Streets of This Town" and "Red Light Valentine". We are sure this debut won't disappoint all the punk rockers out there!! This is a killer mix of ANGRY SAMOANS, THE PAGANS, wild '60's Garage Punk and snotty KILLED BY DEATH inspired rawk and roll, played and recorded the modern way, powerful, mean and direct like any good punk rock record should be. Keep both eyes open wide on this band, they will be big one day. |

The Badnads - Japanese Bloodbath - 7" Vinyl Debut EP from this UK based unit. This is hardcore wrestling inspired raw rock'n'roll equally balanced between classic Punk Rock and smokin' Country-punk; it will make a lot of necks hurt for furious headbanging! 4 Great tunes including Jerry Lee Lewis and David Allan Coe covers. it's a total sonic beatdown. This one has a feel verging on Oi, with lyrics about loving wrestling, drinking, and being unfriendly-awesome stuff. Fans of any Confederacy of Scum bands will certainly embrace the Badnads with open arms. This 7" is definitely coming from that school of thought. A spoken intro and outtro by indie wrestling superstar Madman Pondo gives this slab an extra dash of class. |

Schifosi - Absentium Existence - CD Absentium Existence picks up where "ill winds from outopia" and "half lit world" left off and carries on their legacy of brutal epic melodic crust. Their best effort so far in songwriting and production. These songs hauntingly linger long after listening. For the uninformed, SCHIFOSI are from Australia and plays broodingly dark heavy hardcore with female vocals. From the first tortured drum beat this will have you grooving and dancing whilst crying about the demise of mother earth. Totally morose lyrics completing the dark music. An excruciating aural pummeling to complement the coming apocalypse. |

Chickenhawk / I Breathe Spears / With Scissors - 3 band split - CD For those of you who don't have the time or inclination to click through thousands of myspace pages for your new music fix, this inspring three-band split CD takes you straight to the good stuff. First up, Leeds trio Chickenhawk deliver two tracks of killer chaotic freaked-out prog-core, while I Breathe Spears weld black metal chainsaw guitars to a barrage of blastbeats and throat-ripping screams. Saving the best 'til last, Brightons With Scissors (featuring members of Eighties Matchbox) prove that hardcore can be inventive without losing the energy, winding up a CD that proves there is still plenty to get excited about on our doorsteps. |

"The Golden Beauty",
"Live For The Moment".
VOODOO SHOCK is melancholic yet melodic Doom-metal in the vein of bands such as St. Vitus, The Obsessed, and Spirit Caravan. Sometimes a bit more up tempo and "rocking", but generally speaking slow and very doomy. This is Wino-inspired Doom |

The murder obsession - Digital Expence Recal - CD This is a metalcore band from Sittingbourne (United Kingdom) which is busy making music for about two years. They got a new singer not so long ago and apparently is was the right guy for the job because this is the result of their hard work.
An excellent album from a band which combines metalcore with crazy breaks which makes you want to smash everything to pieces that stands near you! And there are even some death influences in it. Maybe a negative point is that the structure of the songs arent really memorable, there are a few catchy parts in some of the songs, but if they could just work a little bit more towards such parts the album would be close to perfect. I think you can compare the band to As I Lay Dying, Black Dahlia Murder and maybe even a bit old Shattered Realm. The artwork is very cool done and it fits the music very well. And as far for the production is concerned there are no problems its very tight and totally not over-produced as you sometimes get with such bands. Cool band, cool music so absolutely no reason why you shouldnt pick this album up! |

Sun of nothing - and voices, words, faces... - CD any band that starts their disc out with a 13 minute noise track and manages to run a gauntlet of sounds ranging from Sabbathy sludge to insane grind blasts definitely will get some props from my direction, and that is just what these guys are getting! There is no definite way to describe Sun of Nothing's sound. Its is out there, that is for sure. They take some ingredients of sludge and stoner rock, add a dash of noise, season lightly with blast beats and top it off with inhuman vocals that would sound at home in a gore/grind band. Its completely crazy and yet somehow it works. Hell, it kicks ass! Imagine the bastard child of Grief, Bongzilla, Regurgitate and Swans and you wouldn't be that far off. This is a great disc that is guaranteed to destroy your sanity. Even the title and artwork are completely off the wall |

Straighthate - Grim Memories - CD These guys recently appeared on the Blackfish tribute to thrash compilation release covering Slayers Black Magic and boy did they deliver a ripper of a version that would have Slayer listening up with interest I reckon. Imagine my interest when this fell to me for review. Blisteringly fast songs with screaming hate filled vocals from an ex old school hardcore come deathcore band. These 5 songs will lacerate your jugular wide open and rip your entire insides out for all to see from start to end. Or maybe it will tear you a new arsehole, whichever you prefer. pure fucking evil record and after you play it Ill see you in hell!!! |

Lazarus Blackstar - 7" Vinyl Lazarus Blackstar is the perfect release for the changing of the seasons. As the beach towels are folded for the last time, the familiar smell of sun cream and ice cream becomes a distant memory and while the trees lose their greenery, Calculon records make it all the more bleak with this concrete-like release. Forged from ex-members of Khang (an amazing band) coupled with the recognisable tones of Paul Catten (Murder One, Medulla Nocte, every UK band under the sun), this makes for an incredible combo.
This 7inch, on very attractive red and black marble splatter-effect vinyl is a brilliant follow up to the recent album 'Revelations', it sounds incredible and manages to squeeze two long dirges into its thick grooves.
A-side, 'Make Believe Master' is a triumph in slowed down, stripped-bare doom, the guitar tone is a trademark of theirs and fully vibrates its way into your psyche. Although Catten's half-screamed, half-moaned lyrics feature very high in the mix, and tend to be the main focus, they do not detract from a band hell-bent on denting your frontal lobes.
Even more slowness presides over the second side for the mental-asylum moan of 'The Anaesthetic Stopped Me Screaming' which drags and drags, but in the way you'd want music like this to. Go any slower next time lads, and you'll be falling asleep mid-riff!

Charger / Black Eye Riot - Split 7" Vinyl Split 7" Vinyl On Transparent Red
This limited coloured vinyl brings together Stoke-On-Trent sludge giants Charger and the harsh-punk of Swansea's Black Eye Riot.
- Charger's "the amputee" opens at a furious pace which is opposed to their usual lurching sludge. The cacophonous vocals rage over the raw production before the song devolves into a dirge that reminds me of Fistula and gives me the sensation of being crushed. after the song has ended it is like a bomb has gone off and feedback is all that remains in the smoky aftermath.
- Black Eye Riot's two tracks are pure unadulterated hardcore punk violence - a collision of aggro, bruises and bitterness. "Battered by elephants" is like Discharge on crack trying to control a gas tanker with no brakes - loud and lethal. the production is of similar quality to their full length and couldn't be more suited to the band's style. i made some notes while listening to this and the final comment was "ear holes have been raped"... Among The Missing / Bumsnogger - Bum The Missing - 7" Vinyl Done especially for the "Bum the missing tour 2005"
Two great examples of how a combination of strong booze and a bad attitude can result in gloriously loud and filthy music. Bumsnogger may have an appalling name, but their twisted sludge is guaranteed to send you creaming towards the off-licence. Among The Missing are altogether darker and more unhinged, like a council estate Black Flag whacked out on 'ludes. Doom-laden fun for all the family. Catch them on the 'Bum The Missing' tour now... Bumsnogger - And Destroy All Those - CD Sabbath-flavored stoner-sludge, disgustingly down-tuned and overflowing with grimy, inebriated rock 'n' roll 5 track debut EP.
Like a marginally less chaotic Mistress, with a greater sense of melody and a strong grasp of Nebula-style dynamic subtlety, this Nottingham quintet are distinctive enough to stand out from the crowd and, judging by these five tracks, they have material of sufficient quality to ensure a successful future. Their motto is "drink beer and fuck", they have the best song title of the year so far ('Murdering The Homeless') and they kick arse. |
