Covenance - Ravaging The Pristine Formed by formerex members of DYING FETUS (Vince Matthews-vocals) and MISERY INDEX (Bruce Greig-Guitars, Matt Byers-Drums), COVENANCE is a brutal Death Metal band from the US. Alternating between mid paced chugging atop speedy double kick and Grind intensity blast beating, this is (only!) 8 minutes of neck exercise I sorely needed. The guitars are thick and clear and the bits of clean channel they throw in two of the songs make for a great contrast to the heaviness. Vocals are low growl to mid range. pretty standard DM voice but good and hostile.
Stylistically, it is firmly entrenched in American Death Metal territory, having much the same vibe as HATE ETERNAL (and Erik Rutan mastered this) and a number of other USDM bands. This is the only thing about the disc that brings it down a bit: COVENANCE doesn't really bring anything new to the table and the very short demo nature of this doesn't give a true picture of how a full length would stand up to repeated listens. Liking the style helps to alleviate some of this for me (yes Metalcore fans, I am a hypocrite) and I wouldn't hesitate to check out further work by the band.
The title alone is worth a point with me! 'Ravaging The Pristine' brings all kinds of bizarre visuals into my mind and I love it; definitely album title of the year material. Even if it was called 'Demo 2005', it would still be worth putting on your check-out list. |

Criminal Element - Career Criminal (Double 7") Make a mental list of your top 10 all-time favourite Death Metal bands. Done? Good. Now tell me that CRIMINAL ELEMENT doesn't posses a member from at least one of these bands. This supergroup boasts among its ranks members of SUFFOCATION, DYING FETUS, CATASTROPHIC, VITAL REMAINS and PYREXIA. Needless to say, those are some big, big names (well maybe not CATASTROPHIC, but the others are).
What CRIMINAL ELEMENT have to offer is just under 19 minutes of poorly produced yet fairly satisfying Death/Grind of the very oldest school. Dirty chugging riffs, an assload of grooves, flurries of blasting Grind and a dual vocal attack of scream/growl alternation are the fare. Add one absolutely ball stomping, and I mean ball-fucking-stomping riff at the start of the title track and you've got yourself a slice of fine Death/Grind pie.
Some simple instructions for fans of SUFFOCATION, ASSUCK, NAPALM DEATH and TERRORIZER: Look at the album art in this review. Look at the 'Buy Me!' button below it. Click that button. |

Frongskin / Taunt - Split Finally this nasty, alcohol imbued and drug-abusing cluster bomb is OUT NOW! Each band one song. While both playing the same style of dirty, grooving sludge, they still emphasize their own approach and blend.
Taunt with a monumental, 1 riff based but very varied song that crumbles every piece of dope. Foaming with rage, Frogskin on the other hand blow out a rumbling blast of a song, spitting acid in nearly 8 minutes.
While Taunt are self-destructive and desperate, Frogskin concentrate on suffering, pain and anger.
Both smashing in the mud as hell, so fasten your seatbelts! |

Tunguska / De Novissimis - Split 7" "Fucking great split single with two bands that were new to me, Tunguska and De Novissimis. Both bands share the same city; Dublin, Ireland. The side I put on first was the one from De Novissimis, which blew me away with some very grim vocals on top of dark, powerful, blasting sludgy metal riffs. When the song reaches its middle point, they crack down in some slow, meaty sludge core that has the right atmosphere: negative, evil and heavy. De Novissimis only provide one song on their side, but it's a ferocious one. On the other side we find Tunguska, who share two songs with us. Just like De Novissimis I have the feeling that Tunguska wants to let the world/scene know what they're capable of. Result: no filler, all killer. The two songs of brutal, metallic hardcore has the same powerfull blasting capacity as their companions on the split. Tunguska speed everything up though. Pretty fast riffing and bombastic, yet fast drumming. Sometimes the atmosphere from their two songs reminded me of Buried Inside etc. At the end of the second song they include some more melodic, higher pitched guitars too (yet they stay brutal). Awesome 7"." |

Stumm / Taunt - Split 7" Vinyl
SOLD OUT - SOLD OUT
I originally released this a few months ago but because of the piss poor vinyl quality i had to get it repressed. its now sounding and looking exactly the way it should.
This is over 14 minutes of the most evil thick sounding sludge / doom you will ever hear pressed to heavyweight black vinyl.
Stumm was formed in Turku in the autumn of 2003 to play slow, primitive and hateful sludge. Influences are not limited to sludge alone, but range all the way from punk/hc/crust/grind and death/black/doom metal to drone/post-hardcore and death industrial/power electronics.
After some appearances in different projects back in the days, Taunt was formed early 2006 to play slow and primitive sludge.
Stumm - 2x6
Taunt - I
Pressed on heavyweight black vinyl, limmited to 200

Concetration Champ & Silent Front - LTD Cream 7" Vinyl Concentration Champ hail heavy influences from noise-rock Load Record legends Pink and Brown/ Lightning Bolt, but bring a much more spazzy approach and a lot more Bass heavy
Silent Front can only be described as one of, if not the best post rock hardcore band in the UK. More angular than a warehouse full of set squares and harder than trying to read professor Stephen Hawkin's 'a brief history of time' after eight pints of stella. |
